Book guilt

Anyone who’s ever had a pile of half read books beside their bed will know the frustration I’m feeling right now. Night after night, I reach out, grab one off the pile, and say ‘This is it, tonight I’ll get engrossed’, only to throw it down after a page and vow to dump it on ‘useless’ bookshelf. Only thing is, I suffer from that awful affliction of unread book guilt…Once I get to a certain point with a book, there’s no going back, even if I’m despising every page of it. Audrey Niffineggar’s ‘Her Fearful Symmetry’ was one of those. I started out with great expectations – I loved the Time Traveller’s Wife, so thought I couldn’t go too wrong with her next novel….but I could, I did. It was one of the most ridiculous, ill-thought out, sloppy books I’ve ever read. But, due to my aforementioned affliction, I read it right to the end, threw it down and proceeded to bore everyone who’d listen about how much I hated the book. I’m in serious need of a can’t put down, life-changing page turner – any suggestions for the perfect book to restore my faith in night-time reading?
