Paddy’s Day Palava

I remember, as a kid, practicing for weeks ahead for the Paddy’s Day Parade. It was a big thing in our school, and everyone had to take part. I used to be a majorette, with pom poms made out of cut-up Dunnes bags, then when I was a year older, I was promoted to the baton gang, when we’d march up Shop Street in our little mini red dresses, spanking new Pennys white pumps. Smiling cheesily at our parents as they stood in the crowds snapping away proudly. Then there was the year when I had to haul an unbecoming piano accordion, while playing it, and marching in time, in the rain…not my best moment. Anyone remember the poor souls who didn’t have a musical bone in their body, being forced to blow into a tin whistle and pretend to play for effect!! Ahhh, those were the days! Since then, once the few college sessions were behind me, there’s been very little in terms of Paddy’s Day celebrations – what do people get up to these days? Any different or funky events going on, we’d love to hear about them…
