FASHIOnATION

Fashion and art collided recently with some interesting results in the form of FASHIOnATION. This photographic collaboration is the brainchild of the Visual Communication final year students at Limerick School of Art and Design who took a college project and turned it into one of the city’s most exciting exhibitions to date.

Twenty-nine students from both departments worked together to produce ‘FASHIOnATION’, ten of which are Limerick based students. The remaining students hail from the four corners of the country including Galway, Clare, Kildare and Cork. What started out as a college brief has now mushroomed into a successful event and with the help of the Creative Limerick initiative, students were able to use empty spaces around the city to exhibit their work. The Visual Communications students worked on themes employed by the Fashion Design students for the creation of their garments. This is the first collaboration of its kind between the departments and has proved very successful.

According to Olivia O’Sullivan, one of the students involved, “the fashion students end up with photography of a high standard for their portfolio and us as photographers are given interesting subjects to photograph”.

Another student Karin van Soest says all the students involved helped to make it a success. “Students prepared the gallery space and dedicated their time to organising the event with some people taking on the look of the exhibition while others took care of printing the photographs, pr and event management.”

David O’Sullivan, a Visual Communications student, is also involved with a Creative Limerick space. “We wanted to take it out of the college and let members of the public see what we do. That’s where the Creative Limerick initiative worked well for us.”

The launch of ‘Fashionation’ was held in the All Out Design Gallery on Sarsfield Street and hundreds of people turned up to show their support.

Make sure not to miss the Visual Communication student’s end of year show taking place from 19 June at LSAD, Clare Street, Limerick.
